Dr. Khoruts is a Medical Director of the University of Minnesota Microbiota Therapeutics Program (http://www.microbiota-therapeutics.umn.edu/). This multidisciplinary program, which brings together clinical and basic science expertise, has been one of the leaders in the field of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). Some of the accomplishments include several firsts, including demonstration that FMT results into engraftment of donor distal gut microbial communities into recipients suffering from multiply recurrent C. difficile infection (rCDI) and development/publication of a standardized protocol of fecal microbiota purification and preservation.

The Microbiota Therapeutics Program continues to deliver care for patients suffering with C. difficile infections at the University of Minnesota. It are also partnered with OpenBiome as the manufacturer of FMT products for treatment of patients with C. difficile infections that fail standard antibiotic therapies. These products include frozen/liquid suspensions of fecal microbiota for treatment of rCDI and severe/fulminant C. difficile colitis; encapsulated, freeze-dried microbiota for rCDI; and powdered freeze-dried microbiota for oral administration in liquid form. All products are manufactured using GMP protocols.
