Dr. Fischer is a professor of medicine, a practicing gastroenterologist, and the director of the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) and FMT (fecal microbiota transplantation) programs at Indiana University. Her IBD team consists of 6 faculty physicians, a PA, and large group of support staff who collectively manage the care of over 4,000 patients with IBD. Her research team conducts over 20 clinical trials a year.

She was born and raised in Budapest, Hungary, and received her medical degree from Semmelweis University in 1992. After obtaining board certification in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, she came to the US to conduct bench research in molecular biology at Indiana University, where she later completed a combined residency and fellowship training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology following the “Clinical Investigator Pathway”. She received advanced training in IBD and earned a Masters of Science Degree in Clinical Science. She joined Indiana University as a faculty in 2011.

Dr. Fischer is one of the early adaptors of Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) as a therapeutic strategy to correct C. difficile infection-caused dysbiosis. Her research focuses on outcomes of FMT in C. difficile infection with emphasis on fulminant disease and with concomitant IBD. She is also a clinical trialist, having participated as a site PI in many sponsored studies.
